He might be one of Liverpool's favourite son's, but footballer Steven Gerrard's wife Alex has risked upsetting the whole of Liverpool after sensationally declaring the city is 'rough.'

The party-loving WAG from Aintree, Merseyside, 26, says she no longer goes out in the city because the nightspots 'attract the wrong type of people'.

Ironically, Alex's comments made in a magazine interview came as she and her husband were seen enjoying a night out in London, days after he was sensationally acquitted of affray.

The Liverpool captain, who was cleared of assault despite admitting he repeatedly punched a man in a drunken row over music in a nightclub, took Curran for dinner to London's Nobu Berkeley restaurant.

Alex's comments are sure to anger Liverpudlians, who are known for being fiercely defensive of their home town.

In an interview with new! magazine, the WAG Alex said: 'It's not the same any more. To be honest, it's rough.

'Everywhere new that opens attracts the wrong type of people. It's not nice, so I haven't bothered to go out.'

Last night the couple enjoyed a romantic dinner at the top London restaurant, which is a favourite of celebrities including Cheryl Cole.

It was the first night out for England footballer Gerrard since his court appearance as the couple

Last week Liverpool captain Steven - who married Alex in June 2007 - was cleared of affray following a five-day trial at the city's crown court.

He punched Marcus McGee, 34, at least three, leaving him with a black eye, a missing tooth and a head wound that required stitches.

But Steven, 29, insisted he acted in self defence, insisting he thought he was was about to be attacked at The Lounge Inn in Southport, Merseyside.

Curran, dressed in skinny jeans ripped at the knee, a sleeveless top and huge handbag, later accompanied Gerrard to the Mayfair hotel for a drink, where he presumably gave the bar's CD player a wide berth.

Last week a jury took just over an hour to acquit him of affray on the grounds that he acted in self-defence, even though he accepted that businessman Marcus McGee had not threatened to attack him.

The judge told the £5million-a-year player that while he had been 'unwise' to pursue the 'trivial' dispute over what songs were played during a night out, he left the dock with his reputation intact.

As he emerged from the Liverpool Crown Court, Gerrard was applauded by fans who also shouted 'Come on Rocky' - a reference to the fact that the prosecution had spoken of Gerrard throwing punches like a professional boxer.

Although Alex didn't attend the hearing, she certainly played the supportive wife last night.
The charge had carried the threat of a three-year prison sentence which would have been a crushing blow to Gerrard's playing career as well as his lucrative endorsement deals.

CCTV footage had shown the 29-year-old delivering a sequence of uppercut punches at Mr McGee before being dragged away by his friends.

Gerrard had admitted throwing at least three punches after a row over who got to choose the music being played in a bar where he and his friends were celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United.

But he denied affray, saying he lashed out only because he thought Mr McGee was about to hit him after 'a heated exchange of words'.
